Sleep is all downhill past age 12
UNNATI GANDHI From Thursday's Globe and Mail

The gist of this article are in these sentences:

Physiologically, children are at a stage in their lives where their brains are still growing and require a lot of rest, but they're old enough that they remain alert all day without needing to take a nap. Children between these ages typically fall asleep within 20 to 30 minutes of getting in bed; they don't wake up or need their parents in the middle of the night; they spend a lot more of their night in deep, "slow-wave" sleep than adults do; and they get up about the same time every day -- without the need for an alarm clock or parental prodding -- feeling refreshed.
